What is the scale of pollution in Citarum River?2000 industries around Citarum river have been contaminating 5,020 square miles of the river with lead, mercury, arsenic and other toxins but one of the biggest toxin waste contributors are textile factories in Bandung. In the 20th century the river had become a health hazard turning black and cloudy from pipes spewing out toxic cocktails from deteriorated plumbing just out side the factories. With the river supporting various daily uses such as agriculture, fisheries, industry, sewerage and electricity, the 5 million people who live along side the river were surrounding themselves with bacteria and viruses.
